The Fair Food Farmstand is a program of Fair Food, a nonprofit organization dedicated to bringing more local food to the Philadelphia marketplace, while supporting a sustainable and humane agriculture system for its region. Located in the Reading Terminal Market, the Fair Food Farmstand carries a wide variety of fresh produce, meats, poultry, dairy, cheese, eggs, and value-added products from more than 90 small farms and food producers in southeast Pennsylvania and southern New Jersey. All products sold are local, and the Farmstand emphasizes sustainable food products from small-scale producers, such as humanely raised meats, organic and low-spray fruits and vegetables, and raw milk cheeses.
The Farmstand started in 2003 as a one-day-a-week vendor, operating from a folding table and a chest freezer. Its primary goal was to educate consumers about the bounty and diversity of local agriculture. The secondary goal was to provide access to local humanely raised animal product (hence the freezer). The all-local product mix and level of transparency about product sourcing made the Farmstand an instant hit with Friday shoppers, many of whom became die-hard regulars. Eventually, consumer demand warranted a second day, then a permanent 300-square-foot stall in the market, and ultimately to the current 700-square-foot stall in a prominent side of the market.
